The multimedia guide for tourism

Previous page Canada

During 2008 Camineo systems have been exported to North America with the implementation of Explora for Parks Canada. The multimedia GPS audio guide Explora demonstrates the synergy of French technological savoir-faire and Canadian skills in cultural and scientific mediation.

Following an international public tender invitation, Parcs Canada, the Agency in charge of the protection of Canadian Natural Parks and National Historic Sites, chose Camineo for the Explora project. As one of the first guides in America, Explora significantly strengthens Camineo’s international profile. The Parks Canada team were convinced by Camineo’s expertise in planning, technological advancement, international experience, and by the diversity and reliability of existing guides.

Explora - Parks CanadaPioneer of multimedia GPS guides in the Canadian market
Parks Canada is the guardian of the cultural, historic and natural heritage of the Canadian territory. Renowned for their values of cultural mediation, the Canadian teams were impressed by the originality of the concepts developed by Camineo and the quality of the guides at other locations. Parks Canada are exploiting the location based video potential of the Camineo platform to enhance the overall experience and the education of the visitors.

Transferring innovation to America
Creating Explora is more than providing a simple technological device: it is also knowledge transfer and mentoring from Camineo to Parks Canada. Camineo trained three Canadian teams comprising historians, geographers and naturalists when creating the guide content. Explora can be used to discover forest paths or to visit ancient forts. Of the 20 or so possible locations, two were chosen for implementation in 2008: Kejimkujik in Nova Scotia and Signal Hill, in Newfoundland. With more than 90% visitor usage during summer, the guide has been a great success. Parks Canada are looking to extend Explora to other Natural Parks and Historic sites in 2009.
